After a lackluster performance at the box office, the Malayalam comedy-drama Machante Malakha has found a new home on OTT. Directed by Boban Samuel and featuring an ensemble cast led by Soubin Shahir, the film began streaming on Manorama Max from April 4, 2025. The streaming platform officially announced the release through its social media channels, offering the film a second shot at connecting with audiences.
Machante Malakha was released in theatres in February 2025 but failed to make a mark, receiving largely negative reviews from critics and audiences. Despite its underwhelming theatrical run, the digital release may provide an opportunity for the film to reach a wider audience, especially among those who may have skipped it in theatres. The comfort of home viewing and the convenience of OTT platforms could help the film gain traction post its initial release.
The film follows the story of Sajeevan, played by Soubin Shahir, a KSRTC conductor trying to navigate the highs and lows of everyday life. He is joined by Advocate Jijo (Dhyan Sreenivasan) and medical shop owner Bijimol (Namitha Pramod), forming the core trio of this slice-of-life drama. While the story was intended to be a heartfelt and humorous look at life’s simple struggles, it seemingly failed to strike the right chord with the theatre-going audience.
However, the shift to OTT might breathe new life into Machante Malakha. With a talented cast that also includes Dileesh Pothan, the film could find appreciation among streaming viewers who are more receptive to slow-paced, character-driven narratives. As regional content continues to flourish on digital platforms, Machante Malakha might just find its audience after all.
