This Vishu, the Malayalam film industry is all set to witness an electrifying box office clash as three highly anticipated comedy-thriller films release on the same day—April 10. With a mix of seasoned actors and rising stars, the festival weekend promises a cinematic treat for audiences. From Mammootty’s intense action-packed return to Basil Joseph’s quirky dark comedy and Naslen’s youthful sports drama, the diversity of genres and storytelling is bound to draw in movie lovers in large numbers.
Leading the lineup is Mammootty’s much-awaited action-thriller Bazooka. Directed by Deeno Dennis, this film marks the veteran actor’s return in a unique role, portraying the mysterious Mr. Nobody. The plot revolves around a cop and a businessman who join forces to catch a serial killer through a series of strategic games. The film is touted as Malayalam cinema’s first-ever ‘Game-thriller.’ With stellar cinematography by Nimish Ravi and music by Saeed Abbas, Bazooka also features Gautham Vasudev Menon, Shine Tom Chacko, Iswarya Menon, and Babu Antony in prominent roles.
Adding to the festive competition is Maranamass, starring Basil Joseph. Known for his directorial success in Minnal Murali, Basil steps into the shoes of an actor once again in this dark comedy thriller. Co-written and directed by Sivaprasad, and co-produced by Tovino Thomas, Maranamass is inspired by the life of infamous criminal ‘Ripper Chandran’. The story takes a wild turn when a serial killer, his target, a couple, and others find themselves on the same bus one fateful night. What follows is a chaotic yet gripping series of events, with an ensemble cast including Rajesh Madhavan, Anishma Anilkumar, and Babu Antony.
Meanwhile, Alappuzha Gymkhana, starring Naslen, brings a refreshing sports comedy angle to the Vishu weekend. Directed by Khalid Rahman, the film follows a group of academically weak students who try to enter college through the sports quota by choosing boxing. The journey from local champions to a bigger stage forms the crux of this heartwarming yet humorous tale. With music by Vishnu Vijay and visuals captured by Jimshi Khalid, the film also stars Lukman Avaran, Ganapathi, and Anagha Ravi.
With all three films set for release on April 10, the Vishu weekend is shaping up to be an exciting battleground for Malayalam cinema. Whether it’s the thrill of a mind game, the chaos of a killer’s ride, or the youthful energy of sports dreams, audiences are spoilt for choice this festive season.
