Sardar 2 serves as both a prequel and a sequel to the 2022 blockbuster Sardar, expanding the espionage universe across two parallel timelines. In the present, R&AW officer Inspector Vijay Prakash, played by Karthi, investigates a lethal mercenary group called Black Dagger, led by a sociopathic antagonist portrayed by S.J. Suryah. The group plans to launch a bio-chemical weapon attack using a deadly pathogen known as Doku. In the past, the film explores the origin story and a forgotten, failed flashback mission of Vijay’s father, the legendary master spy Agent Sardar Chandra Bose. The two timelines collide in a climax that sees Vijay confront Black Dagger to stop the weapon outbreak while simultaneously trying to clear the lingering historical disgrace associated with his father’s name.

Karthi delivers a dual performance as both the older veteran spy Sardar Chandra Bose and his estranged son Inspector Vijay Prakash, showcasing his versatility in two distinct roles. S.J. Suryah leads the antagonist ranks as the primary villain heading the Black Dagger syndicate, delivering an intense and menacing performance. The supporting cast includes Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, and Rajisha Vijayan in pivotal roles, with Yogi Babu handling the comic relief. The film features music composed by Sam C.S., adding to the high-stakes atmosphere of the espionage thriller.

Upon its theatrical release, Sardar 2 received mixed-to-positive feedback for the intense performances by Karthi and S.J. Suryah and its high-stakes setup. However, it faced criticism for a dense runtime of nearly three hours, predictable pacing in the second half, and patchy CGI. The film ended its theatrical run underperforming commercially relative to its large budget, leading to its quick digital premiere. Now available on Amazon Prime Video, Sardar 2 offers audiences the chance to experience this ambitious spy thriller from home, with the convenience of multiple language options and the ability to pause and revisit its complex dual-timeline narrative.
